It is with great sadness that we must announce that we are postponing camp until Summer 2021. This is the most difficult decision we have had to make in our 15 years as camp directors.
There was only one reason we wanted to open camp this summer- we wanted to provide our campers with a sense of connection and community at a time when this has been taken away from them. We wanted this so badly as we strongly believe camp is the antidote to the feelings of isolation, loneliness and fear that so many children are feeling today. Additionally, while it has been months since we first committed that we would do anything possible to open camp, the events of the few past weeks in our nation provided an even greater sense of urgency for us to try to bring our camp community together this summer. As our country has been torn apart due to racial injustice, we redoubled all efforts to make camp happen as we believe the values that are emphasized each summer at CWW help create a better and more just world. Walt Whitman campers and staff have experienced what it is like to live in an inclusive community based upon a foundational principle of respecting each and every individual simply for who they are. It breaks our heart that camp won’t have the opportunity to reinforce these values at a time when there is such a great need.
As Jed’s mom and Camp Walt Whitman’s former camp director, Jancy Dorfman, used to say, “You can’t stop the bad things in life from happening, but you can miss the good things if you’re only focused on the bad.” While we are saddened, today we are choosing to focus on the good- how fortunate we are to have an incredible camp family and gratitude that we have the opportunity to be the stewards of everything CWW stands for.
