Recreation & Off-Campus Activities

Camp Is All About The Kids… but there’s lots to see and do on your time off!

Don’t worry, you won’t be working the whole time you are at camp. In fact, you will have plenty of time to explore the New England area and hang out with your new friends. Check out some of the stuff that Camp Walt Whitman staff have done in the past.

Boston

A visit to Boston is a must when you are in New England! This historic U.S. city is also the largest college town in the nation. Which, of course, means if you come here on the eve of your day off, the nightlife is blowing up! Boston also has terrific opportunities for performing arts and countless summer concerts are held in the Boston area. Plan on seeing a show this summer! And, of course, check out the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Montreal

You will encounter a true treat in this historic port city. Montreal is known for the festivals that fill its streets all summer long (jazz festival, Just for Laughs, etc.), and the clubs stay open late every day! Staff members have gone skydiving in Montreal as well (what a rush!).

Burlington, VT

This chill city hovers along the shore of Lake Champlain where you can relax on the beach or go jet skiing. The city center serves up some great shops and restaurants. Local bands as well as some headliners fill the summer air—and check out those two famous ice cream creators at the Ben and Jerry’s factory.

Maine Seacoast

Definitely cruise up the Maine seacoast with friends to feast on some fresh Maine lobster. You won’t forget it. On your way, you may also go hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire to get in a true New England day!

Local Attractions

Within a close drive are Plymouth and Hanover, New Hampshire, both of which are college towns. Staff hops into each other’s cars at night to go dance, do karaoke, listen to music or get something to eat. We also offer our staff great activities and food in camp.

And How About a Staff Lounge?

CWW staff gets their own staff lounge! Counselor’s Kitchen, called CK by everyone at camp, provides a perfect retreat for staff in the evenings. Staff can lounge in the many couches and chairs, and hang out, relax and talk. We also have Wifi here for staff to use. In this comfy environment, staff can chill out and watch movies. Our CK cook whips up all kinds of sandwiches and burgers on the grill as well as offering more nutritious snacks—a tasty treat for the cinematic experience! We have a pool table, ping-pong tables and a foosball table for staff to challenge each other at, as well as board games and a small library.

Along with being our staff’s regular evening congregating point, CK often is the site for special events. We hold coffee shop–style open mic nights throughout the summer. Staff play their guitars, sing songs, read original pieces of writing, do freestyle rapping and more. Theme nights, complete with decorations, bring an added zest on some evenings.

A couple of nights a week, we turn on the lights at our basketball and volleyball courts so that staff can compete against each other. Throughout the summer three-on-three tourneys are organized as well as staff challenges against other camps.
