All the Fun We’ll Have at Camp This Summer
Every Walt Whitman camper knows the phrase “10 for 2.” It’s our shorthand for how we count down most of the year—10 months—to be back at camp for the two best months of all.
The pandemic extended that waiting time for us, so it’s only natural that our returning campers are more desperate than ever to get back to their friends and the feeling of freedom and adventure that comes from a summer at Camp Walt Whitman.
But just how fun will camp be this year? The safety measures we’ll have in place raise the question whether it’s possible for our campers to have a “normal” summer, filled with the silly games and epic events that make camp so special.
Let us assure you: it would be impossible for our campers not to have fun this summer.
Camp is a place where lifelong friendships are born and nurtured, and this summer is a chance for our campers to get back to making those important bonds. Online friendships have helped to get us through this past year, but virtual connections leave something vital out of the equation for us as human beings. Kids have spent lots of time apart from each other this past year and we know they need some serious kid time with each other. Camp friendships are fostered on a daily basis through everything we do at camp, and there’s a reason why campers tell us that their camp friendships are the closest friendships they have.
The bonds our campers forge with their counselors is another important connection that we’ll get to rekindle this summer. These mentor-like relationships are crucial for kids’ development, and our campers look forward to getting to know their wiser, older counselors each summer.
So to answer the question: yes, this will be a summer of unabashed fun. At a time when everything in the world seems so serious, camp will serve as a reminder of just how much fun we can have together.
