CK Cook/Cooking Counselor

Overview

For those who love to cook, our dual Cooking Counselor and Staff Lounge Cook position offers a summer filled with delicious food and instruction.

By day, you’ll lead cooking classes, one of campers’ favorite activities. The Cooking Counselor teaches children how to make everything from cookies and brownies to chicken parmigiana while ensuring their safety in the kitchen. Campers learn to manage the use of hot pans, ovens and knives and gain valuable cooking skills, like how to follow a recipe and know when a dish is done just by smell. “Watching the campers develop is one of the best feelings,” says Fernando Llano, a Camp Walt Whitman CK Cook/Cooking Counselor.

By night, the Staff Lounge Cook prepares delicious meals and snacks for the rest of the staff, utilizing the full kitchen in the spacious staff lounge. Staff gather here in the evenings to watch movies and dine on burgers, chicken sandwiches, chips, yogurt and fruit, along with specialty recipes during the open kitchen hours from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Along with cooking, our CK cook is responsible for maintaining a clean kitchen and keeping the staff lounge clean.

“It’s great because you get to meet everyone and see how their day went,” says Llano, who adds that exploring camp culture is another perk of the job. “Singing with Rob at the campfire and square dance are always highlights of my summers at CWW.”
