The Best Summer Camp in New Hampshire
Founded in 1948, Camp Walt Whitman has offered local, national, and international campers the best summer camp experience in New Hampshire for over 70 years. Excelling at fostering friendships and respect between boys and girls, Walt Whitman offers the most well-rounded, traditional overnight summer camp program in the country.
Perched on the pristine Lake Armington, in the beautiful White Mountains in Piermont, New Hampshire, our campers gain love and respect for the outdoors with weekly hikes and nightly campfires. Within our awe-inspiring setting, campers get a true break from their online lives and develop an affinity and sense of responsibility for the majestic forests and the historic White Mountains surrounding our 300-acre campus.
Our collective values of teamwork and community are shared by our down-to-earth families, who continue, year-after-year, to choose Camp Walt Whitman for their children’s summer experience. Our 90% camper return rate is one of the reasons why Walt Whitman is the best summer camp in New Hampshire.
Our experienced staff sets us apart from other overnight camps. With 230 staff members on our team, we have greater than a 1:2 staff to camper ratio to help ensure that our campers receive unparalleled personal attention.
Each of our cabins has two full time college-age cabin counselors who don’t become our instructors or teachers. The average age of our counselors is 21 and we only hire staff who have previous experience working with children. Because they don’t become our instructors, our cabin counselors can spend the day with the campers in their care cheering them on, giving support, and providing the guidance to help them thrive.
Camp Walt Whitman offers over seventy activities for our campers to choose from!
Whether attempting the 45-foot-high climbing wall, pitching a tent on an overnight camping trip, challenging the rapids of the Kennebec River, or exploring mountain trails, campers learn to set goals for themselves with the help and support of our certified professional staff. Each hike is geared toward the camper’s age and led by our experienced hiking and camping staff, who make hikes fun with riddles, songs and games along the way.
Certified Water Safety Instructors provide group and individual instruction for beginners up to the most advanced swimmers in our heated, Olympic-sized swimming pool, while expert instructors emphasize proper technique and safety practices for campers boating and swimming in Lake Armington.
All athletics are led by sports professionals on staff who pass on their passion for their sport, and who emphasize building strong skills while having fun. Our instructors help campers learn to appreciate the thrill of the game, no matter their ability level.
The arts program at Camp Walt Whitman provides multiple outlets for our campers’ creative interests and talents. Professional artists and teachers lead regularly scheduled art classes in separate, well-equipped studios for ceramics, woodworking, and crafts – topped off with our end-of-summer art show, where we can see the impressive work of all our campers.
